Free film production software
Most pre-production software has a free tier that stops at your first project. Green Room is free at every feature, with no project limit and no seat limit, because it was built by a production company for its own shoots.
What you get, all of it free
One production file per project. The script, the breakdown, the schedule, the shots, the crew, and the call sheets all read from the same information, so changing a shoot day does not mean rebuilding a call sheet by hand.
- —Upload a script PDF and get scenes parsed out of it
- —Tag cast, props, wardrobe, vehicles, and locations against each scene
- —Schedule on a stripboard, and generate a Day Out of Days
- —Shot lists with storyboard frames
- —Call sheets built from the schedule, emailed to cast and crew as a PDF
- —Cast and crew contacts, and per-person call times
- —Locations with addresses, parking, and notes
- —Budgeting, accounting, and invoices for day rates, kit fees, and mileage
- —Film incentive reference for all 50 states
- —Episodes for series, and chain of title records
- —Team collaboration, with no seat charge
How the free options actually compare
Every tool in this category says free somewhere on its pricing page. The difference is what free stops at, which is usually one project or one seat.
| Tool | Free tier | Paid entry price | Priced by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green Room | Everything. No project or seat limit | No paid tier for features. Optional ad-free upgrade | Nothing |
| StudioBinder | 1 project total, active or archived | $29 per month (Starter) | Projects, seats, and storage |
| Saturation | 1 active project, 1 seat, 2 GB | $32 per month (Pro) | Projects, seats, and storage |
| SetHero | Account and demo project | Calculator, no public list price | Cast and crew count, and shooting days |
| Movie Magic Scheduling | None listed | $29.99 per month introductory, $39.99 regular | Seat |
Why it is free
Green Room is built and maintained by Big Lettuce Entertainment, an independent production and distribution company, and it is the tool the company uses on its own productions. It is supported by advertising rather than by charging filmmakers, and there is an optional ad-free upgrade that removes the advertising and changes nothing about the tools.
No feature is reserved for a paying tier. There is no trial timer, no per-project fee, and no card required to start.
What it does not do
It does not write screenplays. It reads a finished script and turns it into a breakdown, a schedule, and call sheets. It does not track whether the crew opened the call sheet, and it does not import from or export to Movie Magic's formats. If any of those is the thing you need, it is worth knowing now rather than after you have set up a project.
Common questions
- What does it cost?
- Free, every feature. No project limit, no seat limit, no card. 5 GB of file storage per project.
- Is there a limit on projects or collaborators?
- No. There is no project cap and no seat cap. File storage is 5 GB per project, with a 50 MB limit per file.
- Do I need to install anything?
- No. It runs in a browser and installs to a phone home screen if you want it there. Call sheets and reports export as PDFs.
- Is it usable on a first film?
- That is who it is built for. Upload the script, and the parse gives you a scene list to work from instead of a blank form. Most people get to a first schedule without reading documentation.
- Who is behind it?
- Big Lettuce Entertainment, an independent production and distribution company. Green Room exists because the company needed it for its own productions.
